About the Chairman

The following is a brief biographical sketch about the Chairman of the ABHLM, Thomas A. Gionis, M.D., J.D., M.B.A., M.H.A., F.I.C.S., F.R.C.S.:

Current Academic Credentials:

  • #(1). M.D.: After completing high school at 16 years of age, Dr. Gionis completed approximately 3 ½ years of college in one (1) year, and started medical school at 17 years of age. He received his M.D. degree at 21, in 1975, from the Medical University of South Carolina, whereupon Dr. Gionis was reported as the youngest person in the United States to complete this accomplishment. Dr. Gionis completed five (5) years of general surgical post-graduate residency education and training in 1980, and also competed the two (2) year Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Fellowship in 1982, at the Tulane Medical Center – Charity Hospital.
  • #(2). J.D.: Dr. Gionis received his JD from the John Marshall Law School, Chicago, in January 2002 (Cum laude). He was a member of the Dean's List for every semester of law school, was 5th in class standing, and was a member of the Honors Program. Dr. Gionis was invited to join the Law Review staff of both the law schools' law reviews, the John Marshall Law Review and the Journal of Computer & Information Law, and in April 2001 was selected as the Editor-in-Chief of the John Marshall Law Review. Dr. Gionis is a member of the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honors Society.
  • #(3). M.H.A.: Dr. Gionis completed the Masters in Healthcare Administration program, at Seton Hall University, Center for Public Service, in January 2001, concurrent with his first year law school studies. Dr. Gionis’ thesis for the MHA led to the development of a first-ever non-profit international healthcare regulatory compliance organization concerning healthcare administration of emergency medicine aboard maritime vessels throughout the world. Dr. Gionis delivered the Commencement address at the Seton Hall graduation.
  • #(4). M.B.A.: Dr. Gionis received the Masters in Business Administration from the Pepperdine University, Graduate School of Business, where his thesis was selected for inclusion in the Graduate School of Business Library. The thesis concerned extensive financial management analysis of various health maintenance organizations.
  • #(5). LL.M.: Dr. Gionis is currently a post-graduate law student enrolled in the Walter H. and Dorothy B. Diamond International Tax LL.M. Program at the St. Thomas University School of Law, Miami, Florida. Dr. Gionis also serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Royal Society of Fellows Law Review, which is the official publication and law review of the Walter H. and Dorothy B. Diamond International Tax LL.M. Program and the Royal Society of Fellows.

Lecture and Teaching Experience:

Dr. Gionis has lectured extensively both nationally and internationally.

Nationally, over the past 9 years, Dr. Gionis has delivered approximately 90 lectures at various programs of the Harvard Medical School, Department of Surgery, and Massachusetts General Hospital programs in advanced trauma life support. Additionally, Dr. Gionis has lectured at the University of California, Los Angeles (U.C.L.A.), University of Southern California (U.S.C.); the Pepperdine Graduate School of Business, and the Center of Excellence in Healthcare Management Development at U.S.C. Dr. Gionis’ lecture topics have included various topics in medicine and surgery, healthcare management, total quality management, risk management, and ethics management. Dr. Gionis has also been asked to lecture at various national medical associations such as the American College of Forensic Examiners and the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopaedic Surgeons, and has been an invited author of the American College of Medical Quality regarding various topics as reflected in Dr. Gionis’ curriculum vitae.

In respect to advancing healthcare regulatory guidelines and compliance involving emergency medical care provided to passengers and crew aboard maritime vessels of all types worldwide, Dr. Gionis has recently lectured as a guest lecturer as follows:

students and local Chinese officials in Hong Kong; Guangdong and Dongguan, China; as well as in Bangkok, Thailand.
